Andrew Murray, a father from Paisley, has lost over four stone in a year after joining a local weight loss football team called MAN V FAT Football. Struggling with his health and worried about keeping up with his children, Andrew made the decision to join the program after a friend recommended it. He has since praised the team and the program for its positive impact on his life, noting the supportive environment and the challenges that have helped him achieve his goals.
A Paisley dad who was struggling to walk any distance without feeling breathless has managed to shed over four stone in a year after joining a local weight loss football team. Andrew Murray decided he needed to lose weight at around Christmas time in 2023 after suffering high blood pressure and cholesterol. He was also worried he wouldn't be able to keep up with his children. The dad also recalled struggling to get an airplane seatbelt on before making his lifestyle change.
Andrew said: 'It was around Christmas time in 2023 that I decided I needed to make some changes to my lifestyle. I was struggling to walk any distance without getting breathless, my blood pressure and cholesterol were high, and I was concerned I wouldn't be able to keep up with my children. “I remember going on holiday and the plane seatbelt only just fit me when I was breathing in. Looking back at those pictures, I realised something had to change.' Andrew made a change after a friend told him about MAN V FAT Football, a program that aims to help overweight and obese men with a BMI over 27.5 lose weight through weekly football and lifestyle coaching sessions. Every week, players are weighed and this is followed by a 30-minute game of six-a-side football, with extra goal bonuses based on their weight loss. A team's total weight loss and match scores then contribute to its position within a club's overall league table. Andrew says joining has been a 'turning point' in his life, with his weight loss helping the team as a whole lose 400 pounds. He added: 'A friend had mentioned MAN v FAT Football to me before, so I thought I would give it a go - it turned out to be the best New Year’s resolution that I have made in a long time. 'The coach Kenny and the lads at Paisley are great – they’re very supportive and encouraging regardless of your weight. The challenges helped push me on every week and the accountability of weighing-in means you don't want to let yourself and your teammates down each. “MAN v FAT has been a huge turning point in my life this year and has helped me create a better lifestyle and habits. I now exercise more regularly and have joined an 11-a-side football team for the first time in 20 years. “I track my food intake and have become much more aware of what foods I should be eating, creating a much more balanced lifestyle. Anyone thinking about joining up - don't think twice - just go for it!” Currently, 8,400 men take part at more than 150 MAN V FAT Football clubs across the UK. In addition to football sessions, players also receive off-the-pitch support including healthy meal recipe ideas and tips on general fitness. Players also get free access to a bespoke mental health platform JAAQ. More information about MAN v FAT Football can be found online here.
