How a key Labour figure rose to prominence - and saw his future shattered by WhatsApp messages

When Andrew Gwynne stood for election in the newly-created Gorton and Denton seat last July, more than half of voters gave him their backing.

His political career hit new heights nine years later as he was selected to represent the Denton and Reddish constituency in the House of Commons. Mr Gwynne swept to victory in five consecutive general elections, winning more than 50 per cent of the votes each time. Yet behind the scenes, Mr Gwynne has battled demons. Aged just 19, Mr Gwynne lost his mum to ovarian cancer in 1994. Two years later, his uncle died by suicide.

But he has also endured some awkward moments in the national spotlight. In the heat of the 2017 election campaign, Mr Gwynne repeatedly sparred with then-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, on one occasion telling the future Prime Minister during a Sky News debate: "Don't be a pillock." He added that Lyle had given him 'some much-needed perspective in a career that often feels all-consuming'. At the same time, Mr Gwynne spoke openly about his battle with long Covid.
