G Porrelli and Co, an award-winning ice cream manufacturer, gets planning permission to expand its Paisley factory, securing its future and creating more jobs in the area.

Plans to expand an ice cream factory in Paisley have been approved by Renfrewshire Council, giving a sweet boost to the family-run business. Award-winning G Porrelli and Co has received planning permission, subject to conditions, to expand its site in Lacy Street. The expansion will create additional goods handling and cold storage space, allowing the company to meet growing demand for its luxury Italian-style ice cream.

A planning statement submitted with the application highlighted the company's long history in Paisley, stating: 'The Porrelli site and the surrounding area of Paisley at Lacy Street and East Lane has been associated with food production for a considerable time with Porrelli operating from this location during this entire period.' The statement emphasized the importance of remaining at the current site, citing the investment in facilities, the long-standing association with the area, and the desire to continue operating as an established employer. The alternative option of relocating to a new site was considered a last resort. G Porrelli and Co manufactures its ice cream using traditional recipes from Italy and supplies it to a variety of customers, including the catering trade, frozen wholesalers, cash and carries, and multiple retailers. Founded in 1925 by Gerardo Porrelli, who emigrated from San Biagio in Italy to Scotland, the company is now managed by Dario Durante, Gerardo's great-grandson. In its report, the council's chief planning officer acknowledged the company's significant role as an established employer in the area, stating that 'the factory not only generates important employment for the area but also contributes to the history and identity of the area as a result of the long-standing presence of the applicant's business at Lacy Street.' The officer added that the proposals to enable the company to remain at Lacy Street and create additional employment were 'favourable factors in this case.' Renfrewshire Council confirmed that the expansion proposal aligned with the provisions of the development plan.
