A Paisley man was caught producing a large amount of cannabis worth over £118,000 after police received a tip-off and discovered a sophisticated growing operation in his flat.

A Paisley man, Xhevahir Mema, was arrested for cultivating a large-scale cannabis operation after police received a tip-off about suspicious activity at his top-floor flat in St Mirren Street. Officers responded to the report and observed a strong smell of cannabis emanating from the property, along with the sound of fans and a distinctive glow from heat lamps, commonly used in cannabis cultivation.

Upon forcing entry due to fire safety concerns associated with such operations, police discovered four rooms and the loft space transformed into a fully functional cannabis growing facility. Inside, they found 197 mature cannabis plants, each estimated to be worth between £200 and £600, totaling a potential value of £39,400 to £118,200. Additionally, they recovered 14.78kg of dried cannabis buds, believed to be sold in kilogram quantities, with an estimated street value of around £53,200.Prosecutor Jason Stark informed Paisley Sheriff Court that Mema initially refused to comment during questioning but had previously stated that he was coerced into participating in the operation. He admitted to producing cannabis, a Class-B drug, at his flat on February 2 last year. Defence agent Ruth Wallace requested pre-sentencing reports and highlighted Mema's lack of prior convictions and his age at the time of the offense. Sheriff Amel Elfallah deferred sentencing for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment until January 31. Mema, currently held at Low Moss jail in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, was remanded in custody
