Officials from Mr Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party said he is in the custody of the security forces, adding they have complained to the Islamabad High Court, which has now requested a police report about the detention.Speaking anonymously to the Associated Press, anti-corruption officials said Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau had put out a warrant for Mr Khan's arrest last week in a separate case, but he had not obtained bail.

Tension in the country has been building for months with Mr Khan accusing the Pakistani military and current government of conspiring against him.Mr Khan's sizeable support base is already taking to the streets, enraged by videos of Mr Khan's arrest and reports that their leader was beaten.The government will need to ensure his arrest doesn't play directly into the opposition's hands.
