Parent and child spots are designed for parents travelling with kids. These spaces are generally wider, making it easier to get children, babies, and buggies in and out of the car. They're also situated nearer to the store, providing a safer option for children compared to navigating a busy car park.
However, many parents are unaware of the regulations associated with these parking spots. And they're mainly to do with the age of your children. So if your child is older, you could be fined. And if your child is staying in the car with another adult, you should use a normal parking bay instead. Avalon Motor Co explained to the Mirror why the age 12 was the limit. 'In almost all supermarket car parks, you’ll find designated spaces for parent and child parking,' they said. 'And they’re usually closer to the store doors to save parents having to cross more of the busy car park than is necessary. 'Whilst it can seem ambiguous as to who can park there, we’re here to clear things up. You can park in a parent and child parking space if you’re entering the shop with a child that is under 12 years old. The age of 12 is used as the limit, as this is the age up to which a child must be secured in the vehicle using child restraints, such as child car seats. 'If you’re going into the shop on your own and leaving a child with another adult in the car, you must use an ordinary parking space.' Why could I be fined and how much is the penalty? A spokesperson for the vehicle retailer EMG Motor Group said that while you’re not breaking the law by parking in a space if your kids are over 12, you could be fined. They told The Express: 'There is no law against parking in a parent and child parking space without a child under 12 with you, but you are risking a PCN, the same as if you incorrectly use a disabled parking bay. 'This is because the car parks are usually owned privately, for example by supermarkets. And so they enforce rules allowed by their Accredited Trade Association (ATA) status.'
