Parents of disabled children across the UK who cannot access their free school meals are fighting to ensure they receive food vouchers so they are not forced to turn to foodbanks to survive 🔴 AlannahFrancis1 reports
The Mayor of London has announced a £130m one-off proposal to ensure that healthy free school meals are universally available to all primary school pupils for one year from September due to the extreme pressures currently facing households across the capital. But without a pledge for vouchers to be made available to parents of disabled children educated at home or whose sensory needs mean they cannot consume regular meals, parents and campaigners believe the Mayor’s pledge will fall short.
Natalie Hay, who was forced to leave her job as a teacher to care for her disabled son, said: “A lot of these parents will be juggling so many things in terms of therapy, education, attendance.” She added: “If these parents see that everyone in their primary school, all the non disabled children are getting free school meals, they might start to feel even more resentful at the fact that for years they haven’t been able to get the subsidised free school meal for their child.”
“Often when one area takes on board something, particularly London, other areas do follow,” Ms Hay said.
