Former Ajax and Newcastle player Patrick Kluivert takes charge of the Indonesian national football team, aiming to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Patrick Kluivert has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indonesia national football team. The 48-year-old Dutchman replaces South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong and will have the task of guiding the team to qualify for the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026. Kluivert, a former Ajax and Newcastle player who won the Champions League, has signed a two-year contract with an option for extension.
Indonesia has only qualified for the World Cup once before, in 1938 when they were still the Dutch East Indies. His first assignment will be a third qualifying round tie with Australia in March, with two countries from their six-team group reaching the World Cup automatically and a further two progressing to a further round. Kluivert last managed a team in 2023, when he took charge of Turkish side Adana Demirspor for five months. He has previously had two spells in charge of Curacao and assisted Louis van Gaal and Clarence Seedorf when they led the Netherlands and Cameroon national sides respectively
