Sadly dreams have been all that has sustained Waspi for the eight years I have been writing about their plight, says Paul Lewis

Many economists, pundits, and some journalists believe that everyone did know about the changes. And if individuals didn’t they jolly well should have done, and planned accordingly.

So it is not surprising – to me at any rate – that many of the nearly four million women affected did not know about the changes and worked through their fifties planning and expecting to get a state pension at 60. Only to discover then that they had to work – or worse find work – for another five or six years. No wonder Waspi found that nearly half of 50s-born women have struggled to pay essential bills and a third have fallen into debt.

The Waspi campaign has not always been effective. In the past it was riven by dissent over tactics and unable to agree on its demands so politicians felt able to ignore it. Now it’s much more unified andaccusing the DWP of maladministration and demanding compensation. Its second report on compensation said there should be some redress but it would reveal how much in a third report. Waspi went to court to challenge those findings. The court upheld its view that the second report was “legally flawed”. It was withdrawn and no timetable for its publication or that of the third report has been given.
