Penny Wong has been urged to vote against an imminent resolution calling for Palestine to be admitted as a full member of the UN, in a warning letter fearing it would signify “acts of mass terrorism should be rewarded” and push a two-state solution further out of reach.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong is being strongly warned against voting for an upcoming resolution calling for Palestine to be admitted as a full member of the UN.
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry on Wednesday wrote to the Foreign Affairs Minister saying: “It is clear that a Palestinian state cannot be declared into existence”. The letter signed by ACAJ President Daniel Aghion and Co-CEO’s Peter Wertheim AM and Alex Ryvchin argued the establishment of a functioning Palestinian State would require comprehensive reform of the Palestinian Authority.
“It would enshrine into legitimacy the present chaotic, fissiparous and dysfunctional nature of Palestinian political bodies and would thus make a two-state solution less achievable,” the letter said. Admitting Palestine as a full UN member would also “play into the hands of the most hard-line segments of Israeli politics” by displaying the international community has “no understanding of or concern for Israel’s security needs”.The letter signed by ACAJ Co-CEO Peter Wertheim argued the establishment of a functioning Palestinian State would require comprehensive reform of the Palestinian Authority. He agreed with the notion it sent a “signal to terrorists that you can get outcomes from the type of horrific actions that were undertaken on 7 October”.In a speech to the ANU in April, the Foreign Affairs Minister said recognition of a Palestinian state was the only “pathway out of the endless cycle of violence”.
