The Municipality of Anchorage plans to reduce its public bus service starting in October amid “significant workforce shortages and challenges.”
Bart Rudolph, the planning and communications manager for the public transportation department, says this would be People Mover’s first service reduction in roughly 10 years.
The service reduction will address things like the reliability and safety of the service, Rudolph said. “If we have a lot of service out there that we can’t perform, we end up canceling trips,” Rudolph said. “Like, today, we’ve canceled a number of trips just because we don’t have enough operators. And so we don’t want to leave people standing at the bus stop. We want to be as reliable as possible.”Rudolph says two options are being proposed currently. The first would affect most routes, changing the frequency of how often a bus comes.
