An online petition demands the immediate resignation of Andrew Gwynne, an MP who was suspended from the Labour Party for 'badly misjudged' comments made in a WhatsApp group. The petition alleges Gwynne made anti-Semitic and sexist remarks, targeting colleagues and a Stockport pensioner. Three Denton councillors, also believed to be members of the group, have resigned from their positions.

The Gorton and Denton MP was sacked as a government minister and suspended from the Labour Party over the weekend after he apologised for 'badly misjudged' comments he made in a WhatsApp group. He now represents the constituency as an independent.

A second Labour MP and former Tameside councillor has now also apologised for his comments in the WhatsApp group. Burnley MP Oliver Ryan is now being investigated by the Labour Party over 'unacceptable and deeply disappointing' comments in the group. A petition has now been launched calling on Mr Gwynne to resign as an MP immediately while also calling for the Denton councillors to quit. The Change.org petition calls for a police investigation and a parliamentary standards review as well as 'council accountability'.
