We lift the lid on the Belgian boss who would be Ibrox king as journalist close to the man tells us all about him.
Rangers candidate Philippe Clement had his heart set on a move to a European club last month with the 49-year-old fuelled by his Monaco sacking and a desire to open the door for his fellow Belgians.
He recently travelled to Clement's home in Monaco, where he still lives after losing his job at the Ligue 1 outfit at the end of last season, and told us why he thinks Rangers would be perfect for him at this stage in his career, with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab also desperate to land him. But he also warned Clement isn’t that keen on the recruitment side of the job. Here is what Vandewalle said...
Character "He’s a people manager. He isn’t there to hurt players but if they don’t listen then he is strong. As a player, he wasn’t blessed with talent and easy on the eye but he made the most of his career by being disciplined and as a trainer he knows what to do.
Transfer record/Sporting director "In Belgium and France it’s different to Scotland. It’s not the manager who buys the players. They might get advice but nothing more – he didn’t do that at Genk, Brugge and certainly not Monaco. They can ask for his opinion but he doesn't take the initiative. The sporting director does that and the trainer has to work with them. I think a sporting director would be better for him because he isn’t so concerned about talking with agents and so on.
