Delay also risks further Budget shortfall in welfare savings for Rachel Reeves

People claiming disability benefits are facing months more uncertainty about their future income with the Government not expected to set out its reform plans until 2025.Chancellor Rachel Reeves has indicated she hopes to cut the welfare bill as part of her tight spending plans in the upcoming Budget.

The report said that, of that increase, more than 90p of every extra £1 would be spent on the State Pension and disability and incapacity benefits. According to a Government source, most of the 16,000 responses to the PIP consultation were negative. There was public backlash at the time after it was suggested the bar could be raised so that people with milder conditions do not qualify or it could be replaced with a voucher system instead of giving claimants money.

“We have had some positive conversations with the government and the Department for Work and Pensions and pressed the case that disabled people need to be front and centre to those reforms. Ultimately what we want is for disabled people to be properly consulted and informed on what PIP looks like going forward.

“However, this is much broader than benefits. Official data shows that only 5% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment, yet Mencap research shows that 86 per cent without a job want to work, with the benefits system as their biggest barrier.” Ms Vickers, who suffers from osteoarthritis and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes , a rare disorder affecting connective tissue, currently receives £300 a month in PIP to help with her daily needs.
