Scottish Water has pulled the planning application so it can “revisit and reconsider further options”
Scottish Water wanted to build the facility in a bid to boost capacity and improve bathing water quality. And now the planning application has been withdrawn so that the utility firm can “revisit and reconsider further options”.
A Scottish Water spokesman confirmed: “We remain committed to improving the water quality in the estuary and to meeting the future needs of the community. We would like to thank everyone who has engaged in the process of developing this complex project so far over a number of years, and we hope this will continue as we progress.”
The new treatment plant is needed to solve a long standing issue with water quality in the Urr Estuary, with the existing infrastructure unable to cope with the influx of tourists to Kippford over the summer months. A temporary plant was given planning approval in late 2020, which led to a “substantial” improvement on the quality of bathing water just around the coast at Rockcliffe. Locals accepted that work needs to be done on a new facility, but were against the chosen location and feared it could have an impact on tourism.
The application had been expected to be discussed by councillors later this month but it has now been withdrawn.
