Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: 'Social media is doing harm to our kids and I'm calling time on it.'
The Australian government has unveiled what it calls world-leading legislation to set a minimum age for children using social media.
Albanese informed journalists that the age restriction would come into force a year after the legislation is enacted. Social media giants such as X, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook will have a year to figure out how to prevent Australian children under 16 from using their services. Antigone Davis, Head of Safety at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, noted that while the company would adhere to any government-imposed age restrictions, a crucial element missing is a robust conversation about how to implement such protections effectively, reports Wales Online.
No immediate response was provided by X when reached for comment on Thursday, and TikTok chose not to comment.
