Police have named two teenagers, Colin Chabikwa, 15, and Mosawar Zazi, 16, whom they wish to question in connection with the fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa on a bus in south-east London . The incident occurred on a route 472 bus in Woolwich Church Street, near Woolwich Ferry, shortly before 2:30 pm on January 7. As of yet, no arrests have been made.
Kelyan's mother, Mary Bokassa, has previously stated that her son was 'groomed by gangs,' detailing his experiences living on the streets after being in care for four years. She recounted how he returned to her 'sick, underweight and tattooed,' having been exposed to drugs and facing trauma that she sensed deeply. She described him as a kind, caring, and polite young man with a good sense of humour who loved football and supported Arsenal. Mary Bokassa shared that Kelyan had been missing for a year before returning to her doorstep. During his absence, she had to seek legal assistance to locate him. He was eventually found in the Stratford area, where she and other family members chased him at night and pleaded for him to return home. They assured him that they would be there whenever he was ready. Mary Bokassa alleged that Kelyan had been 'taken advantage of' by gangs who had groomed him, and that he had encountered legal trouble during that period. She recounted the time when eight police officers attempted to force Kelyan back into care, describing him as 'just bones.' Following Kelyan's tragic death, police implemented a 24-hour dispersal order covering Woolwich and surrounding areas, granting them wider powers to stop and search individuals and demand the removal of disguises, including face coverings, in an effort to prevent further violence. Kelyan's murder sparked widespread online discussions, drawing comparisons to the death of another teenager, Daejaun Campbell, 15, who was stabbed to death in Eglinton Road, Woolwich, on September 22, 2022, less than a mile-and-a-half from the location of Kelyan's killing. The Metropolitan Police have stated that no connections have been established between the two cases. A separate non-fatal stabbing incident occurred on January 6 in Prince Imperial Road, Woolwich, resulting in an 18-year-old man being hospitalized. This incident is not believed to be related to Kelyan's murder. Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee expressed her condolences to Kelyan's family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact his death has had on the community. She praised the public's support and highlighted the increased weapons searches, reassurance patrols, and house-to-house inquiries conducted by officers. Detective Lee emphasized that the team of detectives is working tirelessly to identify those responsible for Kelyan's murder and urged anyone with information about Chabikwa and Zazi's whereabouts to contact the police immediately. She cautioned the public not to approach them if seen but to alert authorities as soon as possible.
