A bid to stop the winter fuel payment cuts was downed in Westminster on Tuesday.

Renfrewshire ’s MPs have been blasted for ‘attacking pensioners’ after voting down attempts to stop the winter fuel payment cuts.

However, Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Alison Taylor, Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Johanna Baxter, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West MP Martin McCluskey and East Renfrewshire MP Blair McDougall all voted with the government to continue with means-testing the WFP which could see 27,288 pensioners in Renfrewshire no longer receive the benefit.

“The Labour MPs representing Renfrewshire in the House of Commons have shown themselves to back Labour’s cuts to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.” The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages.

Ms Baxter added: “These are tough choices which are not made lightly. They are not the choices we wanted to make or expected to make, but they are necessary in the circumstances that this government has inherited.“I, and this government, will always be open and transparent with you about the state of the public finances and the tough choices we must take to protect our economic stability.

She said: “Both the SNP and the IFS warned Labour and Tory parties of the black hole in the UK Government’s finances.
