Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has repeatedly pledged to halve inflation this year as the cost of living crisis lingers. The Office for National Statistics has published the latest inflation data.
Angela Rayner, the deputy Labour leader, said today's inflation figures are"no means for celebration" - as the cost of living crisis continues.
She said the Tories"still don't have a plan for how we tackle the low wage, low growth and high tax economy that they've left us with".Sir Keir Starmer has appeared to soften his stance on keeping the two-child benefit cap if Labour wins the next election as he fights off SNP attacks ahead of a key by-election.
Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has told Sky News that although it is positive news that prices aren't rising"quite so fast" - they are"still rising fast". "That's why we're calling for freezing rail fares next year as some way of helping people who are really struggling.""I just want a government that cares a bit more."John Glen, chief secretary to the Treasury, has welcomed today's news that inflation has fallen from 7.9% to 6.8% in the year to July."This is very welcome news today," Mr Glen said."We're now down to 6.8%, well over a per cent down.
The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman criticised the failure of local authorities to act, saying incidents are too often left unchecked despite officers having"compelling evidence to justify taking enforcement action".The council's response was its policy meant it would only consider taking action if the complainant recorded six incidents within 25 days.
The council said the behaviour was not anti-social but instead related to a private dispute between the pair and said the incidents should be reported to the police.Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has reacted to the latest inflation data this morning, insisting that the government's"decisive action" is working.
Treasury sources told her that the government is"not complacent" but the latest data does suggest the"plan is working". On the Sky News Daily, Rob Powell asks Peter Walsh, from the Migration Observatory, if migration policies impact people's decisions to travel to the UK, and he speaks to fellow political correspondent Amanda Akass about why the government has picked ending small boats crossings as one of its five pledges ahead of the next election. In the next half hour, the Office for National Statistics will publish its latest inflation data for the UK.
At the time, inflation had eased slightly to 8.7% - but food inflation remained at nearly 20% and core price inflation was at a 30-year-high.However, economists have been consistently off with their predictions throughout the year.
