Joe Biden ordered the military to shoot down a 'high-altitude object' flying over one of its states to be taken out, with a White House official revealing it had 'posed a threat to the safety of a civilian aircraft'.
A"high-altitude object" has been shot down over United States airspace almost one week after a Chinese spy balloon was taken out of the sky.
"The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight," Mr Kirby told reporters. He reiterated officials did not know who owned the object and brushed off comments it was a balloon, following the shooting of the Chinese spy aircraft last weekend.
"A recovery effort will be made and we're hopeful that it'll be successful and then we can learn a little bit more about it," he said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is analysing the debris, which includes the canopy, wiring and small amount of electronics, collected from the ocean. Beijing has maintained it was a weather balloon that had been blown by strong winds to the United States and accused officials of overreacting.
