The number of youngsters being educated at home has risen from 803 to 2,269

Education bosses in Lancashire believe that a more than 400% rise in the number of children being schooled at home is down to increased anxiety post-Covid.

The number of pupils registered as being home schooled in Blackburn with Darwen rose from 44 in 2020 to 237 in 2024 - a 438 per cent increase. Although the percentage increase is considerably greater than that in other parts of the county it should be noted that the starting figure - 44 - was relatively low.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "We have a statutory duty to ensure children in Lancashire have access to a suitable education whether this is at home or at school. "There are a range of factors that have played into this, not least the growing numbers of children reporting anxiety and mental health issues nationally since the pandemic.
