Poundland, the budget retailer, is investing in new security measures to combat shoplifting, following the loss of over £40 million worth of stock last year. The new measures include equipping staff with anti-theft technology such as body-worn cameras.
Poundland has announced it will make big changes in UK stores after a 'challenging' time for shop workers.
The new measures will include equipping staff with anti-theft technology such as body-worn cameras in stores with the highest crime rates. Poundland said a recent trial found that the cameras resulted in an 11 per cent drop in violence against staff and a reduction in shoplifting. Stock shrinkage, which includes theft and shoplifting, amounted to approximately 52 million euros over the past year, a 30 per cent increase over the last two years, according to Pepco. This coincided with weaker sales for food and general merchandise, prompting the group to take steps to improve its financial performance, including lowering prices for customers and increasing cost savings.
Poundland’s head of loss prevention Christina Jesty said: “The rate of store theft and colleague abuse has accelerated significantly across our stores in the last 18 months, and this has been very challenging for our people. Whether it’s store theft undermining all our colleagues’ hard work, or incidents of violence and abuse making our colleagues feel unsafe at work, something must change.
