The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning to pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems to avoid ready-to-eat cold-smoked or cured fish like smoked salmon and trout during the festive season due to the risk of listeriosis, a rare but potentially severe foodborne illness with serious health consequences.
Pregnant women are being warned to watch what they eat over the festive period . As they’re at higher risk of a potentially serious illness. In the run up to Christmas, many of us eat foods we wouldn’t usually. And one food that sees an increase in consumption is cold-smoked fish . This includes smoked salmon and smoked trout .
That’s because of the risk of listeriosis. Listeria infection, or listeriosis, is a rare but potentially severe foodborne illness. It can have serious health consequences for pregnant women. Listeriosis can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, or sepsis or meningitis in newborn babies. The FSA says the warning comes following further cases of illness in an ongoing listeria outbreak. There have been 24 linked cases in the UK since 2020.
‘While smoked fish has a higher risk of carrying listeria, the overall risk to the population is very low,' said Dr Gauri Godbole from the UK Health Security Agency. It says that cold-smoked fish is normally labelled 'smoked' on the packaging. 'Ready-to-eat cold-smoked fish typically comes in thin slices, and it can be eaten cold. It may also be found in sushi,' it adds.
