A new analysis of clinical trials published in The BMJ suggests that prehabilitation, involving exercise and diet improvement before major surgery, is associated with fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and improved recovery and quality of life in adults. While the certainty of evidence was generally low to very low, the researchers emphasize that prehabilitation, whether based on exercise, nutrition, or a combination, may be beneficial.

To address this, researchers in Canada trawled databases for any randomized controlled trial involving adults preparing for major surgery who received prehabilitation interventions or usual care. The trials were of varying quality, but the researchers were able to assess their risk of bias and the certainty of evidence using established tools.
