Anthony Sweeney, 28, enlisted a group of people to help make his lucrative business a reality.
Officers noticed an unusual spike in drone activity around the prison in April 2022 and began investigating where the flights were coming from.
The trade, which made thousands of pounds, saw drones take off from King Avenue in Bootle, just yards away from the prison walls and deliver packages tied with string to prison cell windows. Mr Wyn Jones detailed each role that made the crime possible with Sweeney being responsible for piloting the drone and 22-year-old Maxwell described as a "spotter", making sure the drones were not catching unwanted attention and that he would often field calls from inside the prison. Doherty, 26, was "a cannabis dealer by his own admission" and would supply "at least some" of the drugs for the parcels.
Defending Maxwell, Charlie Lander said his client played "no role whatsoever" in packaging the drugs or flying the drone. He was simply tasked with being a "spotter" but was "tailed off" because he was seen as unreliable by Sweeney due to not answering calls and "partying". Jonathan Duffy, who represented Williams, said she had also gone through "traumatic circumstances in her life" that led to her decisions. She was pleased to tell the court how she works full-time and has a stable home in a new area.
