The Treasury has insisted it will go ahead with the plan to increase tax on private schools on 1 January 2025, despite suggestions it could be delayed
Private schools and tax experts have warned that there is not enough time between legislation bringing in the tax increase – which can only be after the Budget on 30 October – and the formal introduction of the policy on 1 January.
There have been calls for the increase to be delayed until next September to give schools more time to register for VAT and assess the impact of the decision. Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC, suggested on Sunday the timing of the policy should be looked at so it did not put pressure on teachers.the policy was a “really important commitment” but added: “Obviously the government wants to do it in a way that doesn’t have any perverse or unintended consequences.
