Coronavirus: 'Profound' mental health impact prompts calls for urgent research

The coronavirus pandemic could have a"profound" effect on people's mental health - now and in the future, say psychiatrists and psychologists who are calling for urgent research., they say smartphones should be used to monitor mental health in real time.

"Increased social isolation, loneliness, health anxiety, stress and an economic downturn are a perfect storm to harm people's mental health and wellbeing," said Prof Rory O'Connor, one of the paper's authors, from the University of Glasgow. Going out for a walk, however, can feel stressful if there are too many people to avoid - and can make things worse, she says.

Another, of 1,099 members of the public, revealed worries about the effects of social isolation and financial difficulties created by the response to the crisis. It added that the policies used to manage the pandemic would"inevitably have serious effects on mental health by increasing unemployment, financial insecurity and poverty".The paper lists eight groups that might experience the pandemic differently from the general population:people with existing mental-health issues prisoners, the homeless and refugees Mental-health charity's view

"Government and services need to understand not only how to support people properly now, but also what the long-term impact is likely to be and the services that will need to be put in place to help people rebuild their lives."
