Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers have announced a bipartisan draft measure called the Proposed American Privacy Act, which aims to put Americans in control of their own online data and restrict the use of data for profit without consent.

"America wants this, but you do have two women from Washington showing that you can get it done," said Cantwell via a Zoom interview. "This legislation will prohibit big tech from tracking, predicting and manipulating people, especially our children for profit without their knowledge and consent," said McMorris Rodgers via the same Zoom interview.
"If you have done substantial harm,...it includes a private right of action, so you can bring a lawsuit forward. And those entities are going to be held accountable," said Rep. McMorris Rodgers, "The bill is giving power back to the people."
