A judge allowed Hayne to stay on bail before he is sentenced. Prosecutors are now seeking to reverse this in the Supreme Court.
NSW District Court judge Graham Turnbull, who oversaw Hayne’s trial, last weekHayne’s lawyers had argued he could be attacked while on remand due to intense publicity and online vitriol which treated him as an evil sex offender.
Turnbull said Hayne would be held in “significantly deprived circumstances” in custody for his own protection, not because of the nature of his crime but because of who he was. He found exceptional circumstances had been established to grant Hayne bail.
Prosecutors applied on Wednesday to overturn the District Court decision; their application will be heard on Friday.
