The 40-year-old has pleaded not guilty to a charge of using threatening and abusive language or behaviour and a separate charge of using racially aggravated words or behaviour in Old Market Square
A Nottingham protestor has denied using racist language and telling others to push police during recent disorder in the city. Mervin Lewis, 40, pleaded not guilty at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court to a charge of using threatening and abusive language or behaviour and a separate charge of using racially aggravated words or behaviour in Old Market Square , Nottingham, on August 3.
Lewis, of Oughton Close in Edwalton, Nottinghamshire, has denied using racially aggravated language or inciting others to push police officers back. District Judge Sunil Khanna set a trial date for December 5 and granted bail to Lewis on the condition that he does not enter Nottingham city centre except in limited circumstances.
On Saturday, August 3, far-right and anti-immigrant protestors gathered in Old Market Square, as part of UK-wide disorder resulting from the killing of three young girls in Southport on July 29. They were opposed by counter-demonstrators who grouped together at the Brian Clough statue, with the two groups having to be separated by a line of Nottinghamshire Police officers.
He granted the 18-year-old bail until this date, under the conditions he does not enter Nottingham city centre except in limited circumstances and is not to be in a group of more than three people in a public place. Police said 15 people were arrested and eight charged following the protests, but more arrests have been made in the days following the incident.
