The PSNI has revealed the number of drink driving arrests made in Northern Ireland at the start of the Christmas season, coinciding with an increase in road deaths.

The number of drink driving arrests made around Northern Ireland at the beginning of the Christmas season have been revealed in new PSNI figures. At the beginning of December, the PSNI began their Winter Anti-Drink Drive campaign, with officers carrying out a number of road safety operations. Now, it has been highlighted that between December 1 and December 15, 132 motorists were arrested for drink driving offences.

The new figures also detailed the number of people who have lost their lives on roads in Northern Ireland so far this year, with the number of road deaths now at 64. Last year, a total of 71 people died on our roads, which was the first time the annual death toll increased above 70 since 2015. In an appeal ahead of Christmas, the PSNI have urged motorists to stay safe this festive season. They said: 'Christmas is almost here and we want EVERYONE to make sure it is a safe festive season. Sadly, more people have lost their lives on our roads over the last few days, bringing the total number of road deaths this year to 64. Our thoughts go out the families at this sad time and we are urging everyone to take extra caution when getting behind the wheel over the busy Christmas period. Operation Season’s Greetings will is well underway with high-visibility police officers on patrol across Northern Ireland to prevent crime. Keeping people safe is our priority – whether that’s on the roads, in our transport hubs, while shopping and socialising; generally going about their day-to-day business.
