The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has spent £19,719.39 in the last year on repairing property doors that were damaged during police operations. While damage is not their intention, it can occur during searches or when urgent entry is required. Compensation may be provided to affected homeowners.

The PSNI spent close to £20,000 in the last year on fixing damaged doors that had wrecked during police ops. Figures obtained by Belfast Live through a Freedom of Information request showed that from January 1, 2023 to March 6, 2024, the force has spent £19,719.39 on "repair of property doors which have been damaged during police operations ". In response to the FOI, a PSNI spokesperson said while damage is "not our intention", it can happen on some occasions.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson of the Police Service’s Operational Support Department said: "It is very important that police are able to fight crime effectively and our aim is always to protect communities and make them safer. Like all other police services, thousands of searches are carried out every year within Northern Ireland which are vital in detecting crime and bringing people before the courts. "Unfortunately, whilst it is not our intention, damage to property can sometimes occur as a result of searches, for example where we need to gain entry urgently or where keys to premises are not available. Where appropriate, a householder may be entitled to compensation when damage is caused to their property.
