Tapas, comedy, themed nights and Jeremy Clarkson's beer are bringing the punters in
It wasn't the best start for a new pub which was open for just six days when the second national pandemic lockdown was imposed in 2020. But the owners said, after making huge personal sacrifices, the Good Fellow George is finally enjoying success.
Helping them to weather the storm has been the introduction of a tapas menu over the summer, building on the success of cheese and antipasti boards already served. Drinkers have a choice of nearly 20 small plates including a duck egg with baked sobrasada , burrata, gin-cured salmon and bavette steak. If you want to live the high life then opt for Colchester rock oysters with yuzu and pink ginger vinaigrette.
The tapas menu has been well received. "It suits this place, it's really casual, it's got a nice pace to it. It's not like we have to push out a table of 10 main courses at the same time. It's done us a lot of favours. "I always think if you have a lot of repeat custom, your new menu gets very old very quickly, because if they're eating in here once a week or all of a sudden they've had the whole menu, especially with tapas so I am hoping to get a bigger board up there and have three or four specials on for people who know the menu. We'll revisit the menu mid-October before the winter which means we can change some of the salads for more wintery dishes.
"They're decent comedians. In the pub format you get a lot of heckling and to and froing with the crowd. People like the intimacy of it and they seem to sell out every time which is great," said Adam. Another hit was a recent themed night. The Italian evening had a six-course tasting menu, with paired wines from Nottingham wine merchant Weavers, and Italian singers serenading the 50 diners.
