Schools aren't providing adequate meals for kids with teens 'likely to still be hungry after their hot meal'
Pupils are going hungry in class due to ‘shrinking’ school dinner portions, headteachers say. Many schools are locked into Private Finance Inititivve contracts for the meals, with costs rising each year.
One headteacher from the north of England told the i that the quality of food is fine but the portions have got smaller since Covid – and pupils have complained. While another headteacher, David Potter, from Middlefield Community Primary School in Liverpool, agreed that the quality of food is fine but he has an issue with the ‘value for money’.
But this costs the school £7,000 which could be spent on ‘multiple educational trips’ or educational opportunities for pupils, he added. The contracts supply catering as well as cleaning and maintenance but schools aren’t allowed to shop around for different suppliers, meaning they are stuck with the higher prices.
