Queensland Labor Premier Steven Miles has veered off the party line and thrown his support behind Peter Dutton’s push for deeper cuts to Australia’s migration intake.
Similarly, the Nationals are grappling with internal divisions over the issue as several politicians call for stronger cuts to immigration in regional areas.
Mr Miles said at a press conference the more severe migration cuts were his idea first before Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced them in his budget reply speech last week. The Labor Premier said he welcomes the opposition “echoing” his comments and declared the current migration levels have left Queensland with a shortfall of 27,000 houses per year.
Senator Matt Canavan has said: “We’ve got massive housing problems here and they have to be dealt with before we can grow our population more.”
