How to lure young punters to the track? Racing clubs are testing some new ideas during the spring racing season.
On Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington this year, there will be young people dressed up in their finest, music pumping, drinks flowing, a festival atmosphere – and nary a horse race in sight. Palooza, the Victoria Racing Club’s new music festival in partnership with Live Nation, is an attempt to attract more young people to the races – or at least to Flemington.
“Ideally these fans become longer-term fans of the sport,” says Welsh, adding that Racing Victoria is taking steps to try to attract both a younger and new audience by “keeping the sport fresh and keeping it appealing”. After the Melbourne Cup, the biggest winnings include $5.15 million for the Caulfield Cup on October 21, in which West Wind Blows from Japan will be in hot contention, and $5.05 million for the Cox Plate on October 28, in which Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior will compete following a run in the Turnbull Stakes.
launched the richest race on turf in the world seven years ago with The Everest, run over 1200 metres at the Royal Randwick for prizemoney of $10 million. This year, the purse is $20 million.
