Former top Scots whistler Des Roache ran the rule over the man in the middle and reckons he can be happy with his performance
Former Grade One referee Des Roache ran the rule over John Beaton 's Old Firm derby display for Record Sport and reckons the man in the middle will be happy with his display. Here's his verdict on the whistler.
When one team is so dominant in a derby game - as Celtic were at Parkhead on Sunday - then the other team can take umbrage and start flying into tackles and be more physical. But that wasn’t the case - it really was men against boys and John let it go. Towards the end of the Sky Sports coverage, the camera panned onto Record Sport columnist and former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson who, in his role as club ambassador, was sitting in the stand.
As much as I’m saying the game panned out well for John I have to stress that no games is easy and the referee still has to control it whether it’s Under-11s or Old Firm. And John did have control of the game. Rangers at no point tried to be over physical. It was different level of players and all the referee had to do was conduct the game, let it go ahead, and be in the background. The first real challenge in the game was Connor Barron who went through the back of Kyogo.
Alex Rae had his name taken which summed up the frustration on the visitors bench. He’s a big Rangers man so of course he’s going to get involved but I don’t like to see coaches getting involved to the extent they have to be cautioned in the dugout. Yes, have passion for your team but you are meant to be one of the leaders.
