A woman opened up about a rare medical condition that makes it difficult for her to breathe, which is because she has cysts that have grown on some of her vital organs
Hayley, who lives in the North of Scotland, was born with a rare condition called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis , that causes cysts to grow on her lungs and kidneys.
Due to the rarity of her disease - with cases impacting just one in two million people - there is little research or options for Hayley. So the "'LAM warrior", is now on a mission to help other sufferers via a community she has started on social media. She said: "It took a long time to get used to being on oxygen. You do get looks so it is uncomfortable and it's heavy." In some instances, she has collapsed by not being hooked up to the machine.
Going forward, Hayley wants to get a lung transplant. She hopes speaking so candidly will encourage others to consider becoming organ donors. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare, progressive lung disease that primarily affects women, especially those of childbearing age. It is characterised by the abnormal growth of smooth muscle-like cells in the lungs, lymphatic system, and other organs. These cells can cause airway obstruction, cyst formation in the lungs, and lymphatic issues, leading to various respiratory and systemic symptoms.
