A dispute over religion's role in the debate on assisted dying has escalated ahead of a significant vote scheduled for Friday. The debate centers around a Private Members’ Bill proposed by Kim Leadbeater that would permit terminally ill adults in England and Wales to end their lives early under strict conditions. The controversy involves MP Shabana Mahmood and her religious beliefs.

A dispute over the influence of religion in the debate on assisted dying has intensified ahead of a historic vote scheduled for Friday. Christian Member of Parliament (MP) Rachael Maskell criticized Lord Falconer , who supports the legislation, for suggesting that Shabana Mahmood, another MP, was imposing her religious beliefs on others. Lord Falconer acknowledged that Mahmood's views are influenced by her religious beliefs but argued that these should not be imposed upon everyone.

Maskell demanded an apology from Lord Falconer for making an 'offensive and discriminatory' remark. Jess Phillips, despite supporting the legislation, defended Mahmood's position, stating that it is acceptable for MPs to be guided by a religious 'moral code.' The debate is part of a vote on a Private Members’ Bill introduced by Kim Leadbeater, which would allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales to end their lives early. The bill includes strict criteria, such as the patient being over 18, mentally capable of making an informed decision, and not being influenced by others. Additionally, the patient must be expected to die within six months and have their request confirmed by two independent doctors and a High Court judge. Critics are concerned that the most vulnerable members of society could be coerced into ending their lives prematurely
