John was a much-welcomed Glaswegian accent on prime-time TV in the 90s ready to be stern with any Gladiators who got out of line on a Saturday night.
He was one of the best-known voices on 90s TV for a whole generation of children who regularly tuned in to watch Gladiators on a Saturday night.
Though we were given the sad news that he recently passed away at the age 92, his famous catchphrase, "Contender, ready! Gladiator, ready!" will live on. Former 5,000m world-record holder David Moorcroft was one of those he trained and was the first to state that the little coach from Glasgow "just got the best out of people".
