Repairs have begun on Blackpool Central Pier today after a woman plunged through the boards and onto the beach below.
The pier was evacuated and the woman was rushed to hospital. Police confirmed she remains there for treatment. A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said in a statement this morning that the woman had fallen 'approximately 30 feet through the pier'. The woman - said to be aged in her 50s - was treated on the scene before being 'extricated' and taken to hospital.
After the incident, a witness who was at the beach with his children said: "I was walking on the beach with my kids and heard a thud a huge thud next to me nearly on top of my head.
