Previous observations have shown a range of behaviors, from anxiety to changes in vocalization and nighttime preparation. Citizens are also encouraged to report any interesting observations.
Many agriculture, wildlife, and behavioral researchers will be using the time to study how pets, livestock, and wild animals react while also calling on citizens to report any interesting observations.is Jacob Dykes, Ph.D, with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
In a statement on the university website, Dykes sais previous observations during eclipses have ranged from nothing to displays of anxiety, animals taking actions aligned with nighttime preparation, changes in vocalization, or gazing up at the sky. Dykes said there have been past reports of giraffes suddenly running in their pen, gorillas becoming more aggressive, and other anxious behaviors from animals since they don't know in advance what is about to happen and interpret the change in light, wind, and temperature as nightfall. For birds, they would suddenly go to nest and then a few minutes later, when the sun came back out, they would seem to start their day all over again,” Dykes told AgriLife Toda
