The Rose Bowl win and just missing the 2014 Playoff proved TCU could play with the big boys. But Patterson’s final four-year stretch, in which he had a combined 21-22 record, suggested an arduous path.
The more relaxed vibe in the football facility combined with Dykes’ focus on player health and wellbeing allowed TCU’s talented roster to reach its full potential. The Horned Frogs became one of the more fun teams to follow this season, with a host of second-half comebacks, thrilling finishes andTCU was picked seventh in the preseason Big 12 media poll and was unranked in the Top 25 in August.
TCU officials, players and even Dykes credit Patterson for what he built. But for all he accomplished, the Horned Frogs’ 2022 success — with largely the same roster that missed a bowl a year ago — validated the school’s difficult decision to move on from Patterson, who is the school’s winningest coach at 181-79.
