Renowned writer and TV personality Richard Osman reveals how he has navigated his lifelong battle with nystagmus, a vision condition, to excel in his presenting career.
Richard Osman, a renowned writer and television personality best known for hosting the popular game show 'House of Games', recently opened up about a lifelong health challenge that has significantly influenced his approach to presenting. At 53 years old, Osman has lived with nystagmus, a condition affecting vision, since birth. This condition prevents him from using autocue technology, which most television presenters rely on to read lines from behind the camera.
Instead, Osman memorizes entire scripts before going on air.In an interview with Radio Times, Osman explained his unique method, stating, 'I write my own script and I'll learn it, then (on screen) my eyes can go wherever I want them to.' He further emphasized, 'It's what I've always done. When I was at school, I just had to learn everything because I couldn't see the board. So long as I'm not on autocue, I can relax.' Osman has been transparent about his nystagmus with viewers, addressing concerns and queries in 2013, assuring fans that his vision limitations, which prevent him from driving, do not hinder his ability to perform his duties effectively on television. On Twitter, Osman directly responded to a comment about his lack of autocue use, stating, 'No autocue, so I never have to focus on one point. I hope it wasn't too off-putting,' according to Devon Live. Osman's dedication to his craft extends beyond television. In 2022, he decided to leave 'Pointless' to pursue his growing writing career and other personal projects. He has achieved significant success as an author, with both 'The Thursday Murder Club' and its sequel, 'The Man Who Died Twice', securing the top spot on the Sunday Times best-seller list for fiction. 'The Thursday Murder Club' is currently being adapted into a Netflix film, starring an impressive ensemble cast including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley, bringing Osman's beloved characters to the screen in a highly anticipated adaptation
