The former Man United captain spoke to Belfast Live during his visit to the city after a speech at the One Young World summit and revealed the Belfast bar he likes to visit for a pint when in town

Champions League winning ex-Manchester United and England footballer Rio Ferdinand has spoken of his connection with Belfast and why it was chosen as one of the bases for his charity foundation.

“My family bloodline, there’s Irish in there through my mum. But also you build a connection through work and coming here with football I’ve done that before," he told us. The 44-year-old singled out former teammate and Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans for special praise on his return to the club after a long spell away - and says the club should have never let him go in the first place.

With the news that the much-awaited Casement Park could be set to feature as one of the stadiums in the UK and Ireland’s bid to host Euro 2028, he said it would provide a great boost to people in the country. “The Irish guys, you bring the fans, you guys are fanatics, you lot are crazy and you come with that great energy which is always a smile on your face and want to have a good time so that will be beautiful.”

“I just hope like all the other Man United fans that we start motoring into gear so we can actually watch and enjoy football.”
