Many backbench MPs rushed to heap praise on Mr Sunak in a Whatsapp group
This included a relative who usually voted Conservative or UKIP getting in touch to say he’s “loving it”, while a female Tory peer who had been “despondent” in recent years told him she felt “we’re now making the news and heading in the right direction”.However, many in the Conservative party have been openly critical of Mr Sunak’s decision to row back on the net zero pledges.
Former Tory energy minister Chris Skidmore said that “delaying carefully planned and proportionate net zero measures will only cause economic pain and cost householders more. We cannot afford for ‘not zero’ to damage businesses and jobs”. Chris Stark, chief executive of the Climate Change Committee, refuted Mr Sunak’s assertion that the country was on track to hit its targets, insisting the Government had “moved backwards” and that the “softer package” will make its goals “harder to hit”.
