Zahawi’s case has greatest potential to damage the Government. Rishi Sunak apparently feels misled. “Questions need answering”, the Prime Minister says – andYet the party chairman continues in his job, pending an official investigation. If Sunak knows that he was misled, or if he objects to the idea of a colleague failing to pay millions owed to the taxman, he could demand his resignation already.
True, sacking Zahawi outright brings its own problems for the PM, since it risks cooking up fresh trouble on the backbenches, and he’s an affective operator at HQ. Zahawi’s success in business was core to his attraction when he was the vaccines minister helping to procure life-saving jabs. Wealth need not be a badge of shame. And his media ability has also become an asset to the Conservative Party, at a time when plenty of colleagues were reluctant to go on air.
