New laws to crack down on small boats crossing the Channel are expected to be unveiled by Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman next week, ahead of an expected surge in migrant arrivals in the spring
It comes as the UK braces for a surge in Channel crossings this spring, with attempts to reach the UK by small boat typically peaking during more seasonable weather between May and September.
However, the fresh legislation is expected to face significant legal challenges amid concerns that it will breach the European Convention on Human Rights . “This legislation will do nothing to reduce the number of deaths in the Channel or the chaos and incompetence that blights our asylum system, nor will it guarantee sanctuary for those who need it.”
Enver Soloman, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, said: “These plans shatter the UK’s long-standing commitment under the UN convention to give people a fair hearing regardless of the path they have taken to reach our shores.
