The Mets will soon become the 'center' of trades. But when?
New York Mets first base Pete Alonso reacts after catching a throw from catcher Luis Torrens during a game-ending double play on a ball hit by Philadelphia Phillies' Nick Castellanos during a London Series baseball game at The London Stadium, in London, Sunday, June 9, 2024. The Mets won 6-5. At 28-36, it’s hard to believe that the New York Mets are only three games out of the final wild-card spot. But being close likely won’t alter the Mets’ trade deadline plans — they’ll be sellers.
“I think they’ll get through the draft and the All-Star break before the Mets decide they are ready to trade,” one official said, “and when they do, they’ll be in the center of a lot.”All the players listed above are playing out the final year of their contracts, though Manaea has a player option in 2025 for $13.5 million. The short-term nature of those deals will make it easier for teams to acquire them because they won’t be on the hook for big salaries on long-term deals.
Alonso is the player who would command the biggest return. He’s one of the premier power hitters in the game, and he’s bounced back after a slow start, his 132 OPS+ would be the third-highest of his six-year caerer. Alonso has 14 home runs and 32 RBIs and a .240/.321/.476 line.. “Forgetting the Mets, all anybody wants to talk about during the season — it’s not the season. It’s the trade deadline. It’s going to come, guys. I’m telling you, it’s going to come. It will be here shortly.
