Rochester police said they have seen numerous deaths and significant injuries locally in recent years due to illegal dirt bikes and ATVs.

by Jackie NapierAfter nearly two weeks in a coma, a University at Albany student hit by an illegal dirt bike is now awake, Rochester police said they have seen numerous deaths and significant injuries locally in recent years due to illegal dirt bikes and ATVs, and said new strategies are now helping officers get them off city roads.

"There was a small child that was riding on a dirt bike with a family member , and it crashed and the child was unfortunately killed," said Captain Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department. That tragedy is just one of many that Bello says highlights the dangers of ATVs or dirt bikes on city streets.

"They are not registered, they are not inspected. They are not street legal for a reason," Bello said. "They are meant to be ridden off-road. That’s why they’re called dirt bikes. They’re meant to be ridden on private property, not downtown.""They have been used in criminal acts as well," he says. "A lot of these dirt bikes and ATVs are stolen, so trying to get these returned to their rightful owners.

"We want to get to the bigger source of the problem," Bello explained. "That’s where utilizing the helicopter, some of our drone technology, and getting back to where they’re storing them, where they’re operating out of and getting those bigger busts." Bello said anyone who legally owns a dirt bike or ATV should take steps to ensure they are locked in a secure location, and owners should make every effort to secure those bikes.
